Many people think recruiting is just about making job placements. Although that is one of our primary goals at LevelUP, recruiting goes far beyond that. It's important to recognize that as recruiters, we are making a long-term impact on people's lives, whether it is our clients, candidates, or colleagues. As such, the key to your success is to be passionate, coachable, and eager to learn.
When I started at LevelUP almost two years ago, I had no experience in recruitment. I didn't know if I had the skillset that I thought made a great recruiter. But I knew three things about myself: I was passionate about helping others, I have always been a coachable person who is open to feedback, and I was eager to learn about a different field I knew nothing about.
During my time at LevelUP, I have come up with three tips that have helped me become a better recruiter and receive positive client satisfaction.
Call Your Candidates Immediately
I always say, "if there is a number, call." If you can't reach a candidate via phone, leave a detailed voicemail and a callback number. After calling, I proceed to send a detailed email or text and leave my contact information.
Be Personable and Avoid Making the Process Transactional
There are an endless number of recruiters and recruiting companies. What will make you stand out? Why should a candidate or client work with you and not another recruiter? As recruiters, we are connecting people with their dream jobs! This is an exciting moment for them. You want to make your candidate feel comfortable, so remind them they can always count on you and that you are there to help them.
Always Follow Up!
Lastly, always follow up! Following up makes a huge difference in the hiring process. Most of the time, recruiters tend to stop following up once their part of the recruitment process is over, but sending a quick message to your candidate to check in makes such a difference. It lets the candidate know that you care and are thinking of them so that they can have the best experience possible. On top of this, a positive candidate experience can lead to referrals down the line.
The core skills of a recruiter, such as good communication, sales, persistence, and the ability to multitask, are essential to being a good recruiter. However, if you want to stand out as a great recruiter, these three tips can make a difference in your career and positively impact your relationships with both the client and candidate.
